For 2026, Gert-Johan Coetzee responds to this year’s theme, Country Allure with two bold interpretations worn by Kefilwe Mabote and Lerato Kganyago, each exploring the theme from an entirely different perspective while remaining unmistakably modern.

Rather than approaching country style literally, the designs challenge expectation, transforming familiar references into sculptural works of fashion that celebrate innovation, craftsmanship and individuality.

For Kefilwe , the vision is one of quiet strength and refined elegance. A sculpted corset, moulded with intricate botanical detailing inspired by flourishing vines and wild flora, forms the architectural centerpiece of the look. Delicate ivory lace softens the silhouette, while dramatic flowing sleeves finished with cascading fringe introduce movement and romance. A crystal embellished cowboy hat and equally detailed boots complete the look, offering a sophisticated interpretation of the country aesthetic without relying on convention. The result is graceful, feminine and timeless.

Where Kefilwe’s look draws from the romance of nature, Lerato Kganyago’s creation embraces the spirit of reinvention. Bold, technical and unapologetically modern, the design merges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary innovation. A sculptural corset, constructed with polished metallic elements and integrated LED illumination, transforms the silhouette into a statement of wearable art. Intricate beaded detailing flows seamlessly into braided textures, blurring the lines between garment and hairstyle, while layers of hand-applied beadwork create movement and depth across the look. Grounded in a monochromatic palette, the design reinterprets Country Allure through a futuristic lens where heritage meets technology and tradition evolves into something entirely unexpected.

“The Durban July has always been about imagination,” says Gert. “This year’s theme encouraged us to think beyond familiar country references and instead explore what allure means today. With Kefilwe, we wanted to express elegance, softness and natural beauty. With Lerato, we pushed towards structure, innovation and the future. They are two completely different women and each deserved a story that felt authentic to her.”
