TOPS Wine Show a first for East London
Wine-lovers in the Border region will have a wonderful opportunity to sample some of the best vintages in South Africa when the TOPS at SPAR Wine Show gets under way on Thursday.
Arranged by wineshow.co.za, TOPS at SPAR are the title sponsors and the East London event is one of seven shows countrywide.
The festival, at Hemingways Casino, is being held in East London for the first time and will run from Thursday to Saturday.
SPAR Eastern Cape senior retail operations manager Howard Lipman said they were excited to be taking the show to East London as it would provide wine enthusiasts with a chance to experience one of the most popular events on South Africa’s social calendar.
“We feel this has been long overdue in East London and we are delighted to take this opportunity to introduce the Border public to the show,” he said.
“There is certainly some interest in the region and there have been good online ticket sales.
“Also, the feedback we have received from the TOPS stores’ point of view has been very encouraging.”
The shows, which incorporate wine-tasting and educational presentations, have been a must for wine-lovers.
“For example, at the show in Port Elizabeth, held at the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino in July, around 5 000 people attended the occasion,” said Lipman.
“It was a resounding success and we are looking forward to providing the East London public with a similar experience.
“It’s very much about having a festive, party-like atmosphere and it’s a chance for wine-lovers to gain exposure to a wide range of products.”
Billed as East London’s Winederland, a total of 26 exhibitors will have their products on display at the show, each of them offering a different experience for the public.
A number of vintages from the Cape Winelands, one of the country’s top-producing regions, will be available for the locals to sample.
Several presentations will be held during the course of the show giving the local market the opportunity to learn more about the wines on offer, as well as being educated about wine varietals, the wine-making process and wine-pairing.
Lipman said they were confident it would be a success and had already pencilled in dates for the 2020 show.
The show will be open from 5pm to 9pm on Thursday and Friday and from 3pm to 9pm on Saturday. Tickets will be on sale at R135 a person on Thursday and R185 a person on Friday and Saturday.
