Explore a whole new world with Aladdin these school holidays
Get ready to have the magic carpet swept from under you as Aladdin and his group of magical friends make their way to the People’s Theatre these March/April holidays.
The street urchin turned Prince Ali will be whisking you off to a whole new world of magic and mystery, as he meets Princess Jasmine, makes new friends, and learns some valuable lessons about love and friendship along the way.
For the first time Disney’s Aladdin Jr will be performed at the People’s Theatre in Johannesburg from 7 March 2016 to April 2016. This enthralling production comes after an exciting 2015, of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr, Shrek Jr and under the sea in a magical kingdom fathoms below with Ariel and her aquatic friends in Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.
In this adaptation from Disney, Peoples Theatre production promises to bring more well-loved characters to life in a spectacular production directed by Jill Girard and Keith Smith.
“Disney’s Aladdin Jr is a show for the whole family, a magic carpet ride of Genie’s lamps and adventure,” says Girard.
Adds Smith, “The story from the tales of Arabian Nights or the Thousand and One Nights has proved immensely popular and is a firm favourite with elaborate sets and costumes, beautiful music and loads of audience participation!”
The musical staging and choreography will be executed by the multi award winning Sandy Dyer, with music direction from Raymond Verster. The production takes place against a backdrop of an opulent and exciting set by Grant Knottenbelt and costumes by Linda Wilson.
The enchanting story of Aladdin combines all the elements of exciting and educational live entertainment. The play will captivate the young audiences and remind grown-ups that there is a child in all of us.
The talented cast includes Sarah Malherbe, who recently played the role of Belle in the People’s Theatre production of Beauty and the Beast junior, among others, as Jasmine; People’s Theatre veteran Noni Mkhonto as Lago (Parrot); Andile Magxaki (remember his brilliant performance as Shrek) returns to play both the Sultan and Genie; and two other People’s Theatre veterans Sean McGrath as Jafar and Samantha Jacobs as all the extra parts.
The production will also feature the talented Aidan Hyland as Aladdin – who audience members may recognise from a few episodes of Isidingo as at Prince Phillip in the People’s Theatre’s production of Sleeping Beauty.
