ANNUAL FUNDEX SHOW BUSTS MYTHS ABOUT FUNDING
The annual funding conference FundEX returns to Riversands Incubation on Thursday 16 August 2018. With the theme ‘secrets of scale’, this year’s conference will feature successful entrepreneurs who have received funding alongside funding experts.
The headline speaker is media entrepreneur Andile Khumalo, the Chief Investment Officer of MSG Africa Group and founder of I am an Entrepreneur. He will share his business journey, and how he attracted investment for his growing media group. Khumalo advises entrepreneurs to ‘under promise and over deliver’ when approaching funders and to understand what different funders are looking for. “With funders it’s a simple calculation. It’s important to understand the position of the funder; it’s important to know what funders want. It’s the same way with what a customer wants – you have to understand their problem.”
The speaking programme features topics including short-term funding options, funding options for SMEs, crowd-funding and raising funds for a social enterprise. A panel of senior funders including a banker, a private equity firm representative, an angel investor and a development financier will discuss what they fund, and why they reject applications.
The FinScope 2010 study shows that only 1% of SMEs access formal financing, and 87% do not access financing at all – many by choice, as they do not believe they will be successful.
According to online funding matchmaker Finfind, there are more than 300 different business funding products available in the South African marketplace.
“There is funding available – including newer funding models that take a different approach to assess funding applications. While Riversands does not fund entrepreneurs, we can play a role in bridging the gap between entrepreneurs and funders,” says Jenny Retief, CEO of Riversands Incubation Hub.
The one-day event runs from 09h00 to 16h00 with tickets available online at http://www.fundex.co.za priced at R350 per head.
Riversands Incubation Hub is located off William Nicol Drive near Dainfern.
